OTTAWA, le 21 déc. /CNW/ - M. David Strangway, président-directeur
général de la Fondation canadienne pour l'innovation (FCI), a annoncé
aujourd'hui un investissement de 5,1 millions de dollars pour soutenir les
infrastructures de recherche de 38 nouveaux titulaires de Chaires de recherche
du Canada dans 11 universités canadiennes.
	    "Notre investissement aidera ces chercheurs de calibre international à se
procurer les outils nécessaires pour continuer leur travail d'avant-garde dans
plusieurs secteurs essentiels au bien-être socio-économique des Canadiens, a
déclaré M. Strangway. En offrant à ces scientifiques de haut vol des
infrastructures de pointe, nous leur permettons de se mesurer avec les
meilleurs chercheurs au monde."
	
	    L'appui de la FCI permettra d'acquérir une gamme d'installations
spécialisées dont :
	    - une installation à l'Université de l'Alberta pour effectuer de la
	      recherche qui permettra aux réseaux de télécommunications de répondre à
	      la demande croissante pour les services sans fil;
	    - des infrastructures de recherche à l'Université du Manitoba pour
	      évaluer l'efficience du système d'assurance-maladie et déterminer si
	      les bénéficiaires qui en ont le plus besoin reçoivent des services
	      adéquats;
	    - une installation spécialisée en génomique à l'Université de Western
	      Ontario pour étudier les interactions cellulaires qui peuvent
	      influencer le contrôle du rejet d'organes;
	    - de l'équipement de laboratoire à l'Université Laval pour étudier les
	      dérèglements immunitaires du cerveau qui pourraient être la cause de
	      maladies dégénératives comme la sclérose en plaque, la maladie
	      d'Alzheimer et celle de Parkinson;
	    - de l'équipement pour appuyer la mise sur pied d'un centre d'excellence
	      en génomique à l'Université Dalhousie.
	
	    Le financement de la FCI est accordé suite aux recommandations d'experts
qui ont évalué chaque projet à partir des critères suivants :
	    - la qualité du candidat et celle de la recherche proposée;
	    - la conformité au plan stratégique de l'établissement;
	    - la pertinence des infrastructures;
	    - les collaborations de recherche;
	    - les avantages potentiels de la recherche pour le Canada.
	
	    La FCI financera 40% des coûts admissibles des projets; les autres 60%
proviendront des universités et de leurs partenaires financiers des secteurs
public, privé et bénévole.
	    Dans son budget de l'an 2000, le gouvernement du Canada a prévu
900 millions de dollars pour appuyer la création, d'ici 2005, de 2 000 chaires
de recherche du Canada dans les universités, partout au pays. La FCI a
également reçu 250 millions de dollars pour appuyer le financement des
infrastructures des nouvelles chaires de recherche.
	    L'objectif du Programme des chaires de recherche du Canada est de
permettre aux universités canadiennes, de même qu'aux instituts de recherche
et aux centres hospitaliers qui leur sont affiliés, d'atteindre l'excellence
dans le domaine de la recherche et de devenir des centres de recherche de
classe mondiale dans l'économie du savoir à l'échelle internationale.
	    La FCI est une société autonome à but non lucratif créée par le
gouvernement fédéral en 1997 pour combler un besoin urgent du milieu de
recherche canadien : des infrastructures de recherche à la fine pointe. La FCI
s'est vue confier un budget d'investissement de 2,4 milliard de dollars. Elle
investit en partenariat avec tous les niveaux de gouvernement ainsi qu'avec
les secteurs privé et bénévole.
